ENTREVISTA A DANIEL ALLEN CANTANTE DE "THE VEGABONDS" (ALABAMA)

Entrevista a The Vegabonds:
(down english version)

Gravelroad76 conseguimos nuestra primera entrevista. Antes de nada no podría hacer otra cosa que agradecer a Ángela Martínez, Oscar (Farmer), Berto (Fonte do galo) y Manny (Tennage Head Music).... y sobre todo gracias a Daniel Allen (The Vegabonds) por contestar nuestras preguntas, Gracias a todos de un servidor:   Galys (Thebuckmunster).

 

. De vuelta a Auburn (Alabama) y tras una extensa gira por Europa,  decidimos hacerle una breve pero intensa entrevista a una de las bandas más prometerdoras del southern rock. The Vegabonds nos han deleitado con una decena de concierto por nuestro país de los cuales destacamos el que hemos podido disfrutar en tierras gallegas. 

En Bueu la banda nos ofreció un repertorio variado de sus dos trabajos discograficos todo ello entrelazado con versiones de algunas de sus bandas preferidas, por eso entre algunas de las preguntas que les realizamos a continuación nos gustaría saber cuales son para ellos sus  influencias más directas….. sin más rodeos The Vegabonds desde Alabama.

Hace apenas una semana Daniel Allen (cantante del grupo) nos respondía a todas nuestras preguntas, incluso tras leerla creo que disfrutó con nuestra entrevista, así que ahora espero de corazón que vosotros disfrutéis de ella.

·         Gravelroad76: Antes de nada saludos desde España, la primera pregunta no podría ser otra que la siguiente, ¿Fue esta vuestra primera visita al viejo continente “Europa? ¿Cómo describiríais vuestra gira europea y que os ha llamado mas la atención de esta parte del mundo?.

The Vegabonds(Daniel Allen): 

 1 – Lo pasamos en grande en Europa. La gente fue genial e hicimos algunos conciertos fantásticos en algunos lugares asombrosos! Nos sentimos como si hubiésemos conseguido todo lo que nos proponíamos hacer en Europa, y conocimos un montón de gente fantástica por el camino.

·         Gravelroad7: Nos sorprendió el saber que una de vuestras formas de financiaciación ,tanto el nuevo album, como vuestro viaje a europa fue a traves del Crowdfunding (Kicskstarted): ¿Que os parece que gente anonima os haya ayudado? ¿Teneis pensado cointinuar con  la misma forma de financiacion en nuevos proyectos aunque firmeis  por una gran discografica? 

The Vegabonds:

2 – Kickstarter fue un gran programa que usar. Nos ayudó con la gira, y vamos a hacer otro proyecto en Kickstarter pronto para los próximos álbumes y giras. Es una gran herramienta para los artistas. Es también una manera genial de comunicarse e intercambio con los fans.

 ·         Gravelroad76: 25 shows recorriendo Europa de norte a sur en una furgoneta... ¿Os ha servido de inspiración  para componer algún nuevo tema? ¿podría surgir un disco de vuestra experiencia por nuestras tierras?

The Vegabonds:

 3 – Fuimos lo suficientemente afortunados de ver algunos de los lugares más bonitos del mundo, y sé que eso acabará reflejándose en nuestra música. De hecho estamos escribiendo ahora nuestro tercer disco, y Europa será incorporada a nuestras composiciones por las experiencias que hemos tenido.

·         Gravelroad76: De estos 25 shows la mayor parte de la gira fue en nuestro país (España).... nosotros disfrutamos de vuestro concierto en Bueu (Galicia), aún recuerdo el inicio del concierto con esa versión de los Rolling Stones "Lovin´Cup", ¿con que versión disfrutáis más en directo? y ¿que versiones  tocáis mas habitualmente?

The Vegabonds:

 4 – Donde lo pasamos mejor fue en España! Normalmente tocamos sólo canciones originales de The Vegabonds, pero cuando tocamos versiones, intentamos hacerlas nuevas para el oyente y poner nuestro propio sello en la versión. La versión de “Lovin´ Cup” es una de nuestra favoritas, porque hacia el final derivamos hacia una canción llamada “Don´t do it” de The Band y lleva a la canción a una dirección distinta.

·         Gravelroad76: Para muchos de nosotros fuisteis una gran sorpresa, jamás pensé que tuvierais tanto poder y calidad en directo ,sobre todo al ser una banda relativamente joven.... ¿que sensación os ha dado el publico asistente a vuestros shows? ¿que diferencias destacarías entre el público europeo y el americano?

The Vegabonds:

 5 – Intentamos hacerlo lo mejor posible para conseguir un buen directo cada noche que tocamos! Tocamos con mucha actitud, y creo que eso viene de dónde somos. En el Sur, hay un montón de buena música y nos retamos a nosotros mismos para destacar entre las gran multitud de bandas a lo largo del mundo. Nos encanta estar en casa en USA, pero echamos de menos el público en Europa porque fueron tan buenos cada noche, y tuvimos tantos grandes conciertos!

·         Gravelroad76: Recuerdo como a Bryan le gustara mi camiseta de los Drive By Truckers, en mas de una entrevista comentáis que The Vegabonds surge con la idea de devolver a la juventud los sonidos más  puros del rock tradicional y así hacerles saber que no todo es música disco..... Aparte de bandas como Grateful Dead, Allmad Brothers, The Rolling Stones..... a mi me interesaría saber ¿ con que bandas jóvenes os sentís mas identificados? 

The Vegabonds:

 6 – Eso es una cosa fantástica sobre nuestra banda. Nos identificamos más con grupos de rock clásico como Allman Bros., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, por la forma de esas bandas. Somos un grupo que intentamos retomar el atractivo de una banda completa. Queremos mostrarle a la gente que el rock no está muerto, sólo necesita un soplo de aire fresco, y estamos aquí para dárselo a la gente.

·         Gravelroad76: Había vida antes de The Vegabonds, Alex tenia un grupo y Daniel tenia el suyo propio, ¿Existe algún material grabado de esa época?  ¿Como fue el momento en el que decidisteis unir fuerzas y seguir juntos en el camino del Rock and Roll?

The Vegabonds:

 7 – Cuando formamos The Vegabonds, comenzamos de restos. La única canción que hemos tomado de nuestras bandas anteriores sería “The Ballad of the Movers and Shakers”. Yo tenía las letras de la canción y Alex puso la música de una canción que él había escrito con su otra banda. Ha sido una muy buena relación compositiva, y nos esforzamos por continuar sacando buenos discos.

·         Gravelroad76: Os unisteis en el 2009 y sacasteis vuestro primer album al año siguiente, que recogio muy buenas críticas en EEUU. Sacais un nuevo album en enero y al poco estais girando por Europa. ¿Os llegasteis a plantear, hace 3 años, que ibais a llegar a esta situación?

The Vegabonds:

 8 – Realmente no teníamos ni idea de lo que esperar cuando comenzamos. Éramos una pequeña banda de pueblo, y después cuando Dear Revolution salió, consiguió buenas críticas. Desde entonces hemos intentado aprovechar cada oportunidad que nos ha aparecido. Estamos muy contentos de lo que hemos conseguido hacer en USA y en Europa, y esperamos que todos sigan disfrutando de la música que vamos escribiendo y sacando en nuestros álbumes. Han sido 3 años maravillosos, y un gran comienzo para nuestras carreras musicales

·         Gravelroad76: Me gustaría que nos dierais a conocer nombres de bandas amigas, bandas con las cuales compartís vuestro camino en este mundo de la música o simplemente os sentís identificados.

The Vegabonds:

 9 – Hemos tocado con un montón de buenas bandas por el camino. Gregg Allman and Friends, Hill Country Revue, The Heavy Pets, American Aquarium, The Delta Saints, Honey Island Swamp Band. Esas son unas pocas de las bandas con las que hemos tenido el placer de tocar a lo largo de nuestro camino en los últimos 3 años.

·         Gravelroad76: El año pasado tocasteis en el mismo escenario que Gregg Allman, nostros tuvimos la oportunidad de verlo en directo también en 2011 en el Azkena Rock Festival ¿Con que otras bandas os gustaría compartir escenario?

The Vegabonds:

 10 – Sí, tocar con Gregg Allman fue increible!. Él es un tipo fantástico y todavía puede improvisar con los mejores. Fue grande compartir concierto con semejante leyenda del southern rock!

·         Gravelroad76: Johnny Cash cumpliría 80 años este pasado 26 de febrero, NASHVILLE  es la cuna de todo una forma de vida….¿que significa para vosotros haber grabado vuestro último trabajo en NASHVILLE, sentisteis cerca la magia de los antepasados?....

The Vegabonds:

 11 – Nashville es el mejor lugar para grabar un disco en mi opinión. Tiene una larga historia de gente que ha cambiado la forma en que la gente ve el mundo a través de la música, y se siente eso cuando estás allí. No importa si estas en el estudio más pequeño o en un caro estudio de primera, tendrás a alguien trabajando contigo que realmente ama la música. Nashville es la capital mundial del country, pero hay toda clase de música creándose allí. Es realmente un lugar perfecto para relacionarse, y el mejor lugar para grabar.

·         Gravelroad76: Desde hace unos años bandas como The Black Crowes, Drive By Truckes, Cracker, Wilco, Marah, o más recientes como Lucero,The Steepwater Band, The Avett Brothers, The Delta Saints.... nos han demostrado que el rock sureño sigue vivo y que cuando hablas de sonido sureño no tiene por que ser única y exclusivamente country y música acústica, si no que la electricidad puede estar presente en todo momento. ¿Diríais que actualmente ha nacido un nuevo movimiento musical o es un seguimiento de aquellos Lynnyrd skynnyrd, Allman Bothers  ...  ?

The Vegabonds:

 12 – Creo que está viniendo un nuevo movimiento de rock sureño. Hay tantas grandes bandas de la región del sur en la que vivimos, y todo el mundo parece tener su propio estilo, pero es todo sureño. Está alojado en nosotros desde muy pequeños, y depende de nosotros continuar proveyendo a la gente de esta música y mantenerla viva. Queremos que la gente se de cuenta de la importancia de los instrumentos y los músicos, porque la música popular hoy en día está lejos de ser algo real. Por eso es por lo que The Vegabonds están aquí para recordar a todo el mundo como suena una banda original.

·         Gravelroad76: Cambiando de tema: Teenage Head Music.... me gustaría que me hablarais de ellos, como definirías su trabajo.

The Vegabonds:

 13 – Teenage Head Music han sido geniales con nostros! Manny y Carmen llevan una fantástica compañía de giras, y estuvieron muy atentos con nostros. Nos facilitaron las fechas para tocar y la prensa, así que fuimos capaces de tener 26 conciertos asombrosos por toda Europa. Teenage Head está trayendo a Europa la mejor nueva música de USA, y recomendaría a cualquiera que vaya a ver a un grupo que ellos traigan de gira. No podemos esperar a trabajar con THM de nuevo!

·         Gravelroad76: Cuales son vuestros planes de futuro: ¿tenéis pensado grabar un nuevo trabajo pronto? ¿vais de gira por EE.UU.? y finalemente ¿cuanto tendremos que esperar para volver a veros por España?.

The Vegabonds:

 14 – Acabamos de sacar nuestro segundo disco “Southern Sons” en enero de 2012, así que estamos girando por USA promocionándolo ahora. Estamos componiendo para nuestro tercer disco, y esperamos estar de vuelta en el estudio pronto. Trabajamos rápido, y odiamos estar atrapados en un lugar durante mucho tiempo, así que un nuevo disco está en el horizonte. Nos encantaría volver a España, fue la mejor parte de nuestra gira! Esperamos girar por Europa otra vez en 2013!

·         Gravelroad76: Para terminar solo podría agradeceros una y mil veces vuestro esfuerzo. No creo que sea nada fácil salir al escenario noche tras noche y darlo todo una y otra vez, por eso solo podría daros las gracias por cada uno de los shows que habéis dado en este extenso tour europeo. ¿cual fue vuestro show mas loco?contadnos alguna de esas anécdotas que os han ocurrido durante vuestro viaje por Europa.

The Vegabonds:

 15 – España fue un periodo divertido y loco! Tocamos 10 grandes conciertos seguidos en España! Los fans geniales y la gente viniendo al concierto hicieron que valiese la pena cada larga milla y cada día de cansancio. El show más loco fue en Suecia cuando fui sacado del escenario por fans que estaban dándome la mano. Acabé terminando la canción cantando en medio de la gente! Fue un concierto divertido y no podemos esperar a volver a Europa!

Of return to Auburn (Alabama) and after an extensive tour along Europe, we decide to do a brief but intense interview to one of the more promising bands of the southern rock. The Vegabonds has delighted us with a dozen of concert for our country from which we distinguish that we could have enjoyed in Galician lands. In Bueu the band offered us a varied digest of his two record works all this interlaced with versions of some of his favorite bands, because of it between some of the questions that we realize later we would like to know which are for them his more direct influences ….. The Vegabonds from Alabama.

·         Gravelroad76: Before anything regards from Spain, the first question might not be other one that the following one, the first did visit go this yours to the old continent "Europe"? How you would describe your European tour and that has been called you more the attention of this part of the world?

The Vegabonds (Daniel Allen): 

 1. (Daniel Allen) We had a great time in Europe. The people were great and we played some amazing shows in some amazing places! We feel like we accomplished everything we aimed to do in Europe, and we met a lot of great people along the way.

·         Gravelroad76: Us surprised to know that one of your forms of , both the new album Financing, and your trip to Europe was across the Crowdfunding (Kicskstarted): that seems to you that anonymous people have helped you? Have you thought to continue with the same form of financing in new projects though you sign for the great record one?

The Vegabonds:

 2. Kickstarter was a great program to use. It did help us with the tour, and we going to do another project on Kickstarter soon for upcoming albums and tours. Its a great tool for artists to use. Its also a great way to communicate and interact with fans.

·         Gravelroad76: 25 shows crossing Europe of north on south in a van ... Has it used you as inspiration to compose some new song? There might arise a disc of your experience for our lands?

The Vegabonds:

 3. We were lucky enough to see some of the most amazing places in the world, and I know that it will come through in our music. We are actually writing our 3rd record now, and Europe will be incorporated through our experiences in our writing.

·         Gravelroad76: Of these 25 shows most of the tour was in our country (Spain) .... we enjoy your concert in Bueu (Galicia), still I remember the beginning of the concert with this version of the Rolling Stones "Lovin'Cup", which version you enjoy more directly? And that you touch versions more habitually?

   

      The Vegabonds:

 4. We had a great time in all of Spain! We usually play only original (The Vegabonds) songs, but when we do play cover songs, we try to make them new to the listener and put our own twist on a cover song. The Lovin Cup cover is one of our favorites to do, because at the end we go into a song called Dont Do It by The Band and it takes the song into a different direction.

·         Gravelroad76: For many of us you were a great surprise, I never thought that you had so much power and quality live, especially to the being a relatively young band .... that sensation the public has given you assistant to your shows? That you differentiate would you emphasize between the European public and the American?

      

The Vegabonds:

 5. We try our best to bring a great live show every night we play! We play with alot of attitude, and I think it comes from where we are from. In the South, theres a lot of great music and we challenge ourselves to stand out in the great multitude of bands across the world. We love being home in the States, but we miss the crowds in Europe becuase they were so great every night, and we had so many great shows!

·         Gravelroad76: I remember since to Bryan he liked my shirt of the Drive By Truckers, in more of an interview you comment that The Vegabonds arises with the idea of returning to the youth the purest sounds of the traditional and like that rock to make them know that not all is disco music..... Apart from bands like Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones ..... to I would be interested to know with that young bands you feel more identified?

The Vegabonds:

 6. Thats a great thing about our band. We identify more with classic rock bands like Allman Bros, Lynard Skynard, Led Zepplin, because of the makeup of the bands. We are a band thats trying to bring back the allure of a full BAND. We want to show people that rock is not dead, it just needs a breath of fresh air, and we are hear to give it to the people.

·         Gravelroad76: There was life before The Vegabonds, Alex had a group and Daniel had own his. There exists some engraved material of this epoch? Since it was the moment in which you decided to join forces and to be still united in the way of the Rock and roll?

The Vegabonds:

7. When we formed The Vegabonds, we started from scratch. The only song that we have taken from our other bands would be "The Ballad of the Movers and Shakers". I had the lyrics to the song and Alex put the music to a song he wrote with his other band. Its been a great writing relationship, and we push to continue to put out great records.

·         Gravelroad76: You joined in 2009 and extracted your first album on the following year, which gathered very good critiques in the USA. You extract a new album in January and to little you are turning for Europe. Did you manage to raise, 3 years ago, that you were going to come to this situation?

The Vegabonds:

8. We really had no idea what to expect when we started. We were a small hometown band, and after Dear Revolution came out, it got great reviews. Since then we have tried to take advantage of every opportunity thats come our way. We are very happy with what we have been able to do in the USA and in Europe, and we hope everyone keeps enjoying the music we are writing and putting out on our albums. Its been a wonderful 3 years, and a great start to our musical careers.

·         Gravelroad76: I would like that you were announcing yours names of bands friends, bands with which you share your way in this world of the music or simply you feel identified.

The Vegabonds:

9. We have played with alot of great bands along the way. Gregg Allman and Friends, Hill Country Revue, The Heavy Pets, American Aquarium, The Delta Saints, Honey Island Swamp Band. These are a few of the bands that have been a pleasure to play with along our path the last 3 years.

·         Gravelroad76: Last year you touched in the same scene that Gregg Allman, we had the opportunity to see it live also in 2011 in the Azkena Rock Festival . With that other bands you would like to share scene?

The Vegabonds:

10. Yes, playing with Gregg Allman was amazing! He was a great guy and he can still jam with the best of them. It was great to play a show with such a southern rock legend!

·         Gravelroad76: Johnny Cash would expire 80 years this last February 26, NASHVILLE is the cradle of everything a form of life …. That it means for you to have recorded your last work in NASHVILLE.  Did you feel nearby the magic of the forbears?....

The Vegabonds:

11. Nashville is the best place to record a record in my opinion. It has a long history of people who changed the way people view the world through music, and you feel that when you are there. It doesnt matter if your in the smallest studio or an expensive top notch studio, you will have someone working with you who really loves music. Nashville is the country capital of the world, but there are all kinds of music being created and made there. Its a really cool place to be connected to, and the best place to record.

·         Gravelroad76: For a few years bands like The Black Crowes, Drive By Truckes, Cracker, Wilco, Marah, or more recent as Lucero, The Steepwater Band, The Avett Brothers, The Delta Saints .... they us have demonstrated that the southern rock is still alive and that when you speak about southern sound it does not have for that to be only and exclusively country and acoustic music, if not that the electricity can be present at all time. You would say that nowadays a new musical movement has born or is a follow-up of those Lynnyrd skynnyrd, Allman Bothers ...?

The Vegabonds:

12. I believe that there is a new southern rock movement coming. There are so many great bands from the region of the south that we live in, and everyone seems to have their own style, but its all southern. Its embedded in us from an early age, and its up to us to continue to provide this music to the people and keep it alive. We want people to realize the importance of instruments and musicians, becuase the popular music today is far from anything real. Thats why The Vegabonds are here to remind everyone of what an original band sounds like.

·         Gravelroad76: Changing topic, " Teenage Head Music " .... I would like that you were speaking to me about them. Since you would define their work?

      

The Vegabonds:

13. Teenage Head Music was great to us! Manny and Carmen run a great touring company, and were very hands on with us. They provided the tour dates and press so that we were able to have 26 amazing shows across Europe. Teeange Head is bringing Europe the best new music from the States, and I would recommend anyone to go see a band that they bring on tour. We cant wait to work with THM again soon!

·         Gravelroad76: Which are your plans of future: have you thought to record a new prompt work? Will you go of tour along USA? And finally. For all that we will have to wait to return to meet for Spain?.

The Vegabonds:

14. We just released our 2nd record "Southern Sons" in Jan. 2012, so we are touring around in the USA promoting for that right now. We are wriitng for a 3rd record now, and we will hopefully be back in the studio soon. We work fast, and we hate to be stuck in one place for too long, so a new record is on the horizon. We would love to come back to Spain it was the best part of our tour! We hope to tour Europe again in 2013!

·         Gravelroad76: to end only it might be grateful to you one and thousand times for your effort. I do not believe that it is not easy at all to go out to the scene in the night after night and to give everything again and again, because of it only it might thank you for each of the shows that you have given in this extensive European tour. Which was your more crazy  show? Tell us someone of these anecdotes that have happened to you during your trip for Europe.

The Vegabonds:

15. Spain was fun and crazy period! We had 10 great shows in a row in Spain! The amazing fans and people coming to the show made it worth every long mile and every tired day. The craziest show was in Sweden when I got pulled off the stage by fans who were shaking my hand. I ended up finishing the song singing in the crowd! It was a fun show and we cant wait to be back in Europe!
